Black Excellence Gala

She follows Jesus cause He turns her nicks and dimes and flips it into 4 quarters.- J.AK.

Black Excellence Testimony better known as a B.E.T. is my signature piece. It’s a poem that not only highlights my culture, but it’s also speaks to what I've been through as I still learn how to become.

Though this wasn’t my first time performing, it was my first time performing in front of 200+ people. I was soooo nervous lol but its safe to say I made it through.

As a believer of Jesus Christ, He instructed me to wear: my college gown and hood, black pants, black shoes, and a mask. (It was a masquerade party btw) I was very doubtful and kept telling God i’m going to look silly wearing this. However, that night He showed me why it was important for me to dress that way. Though I would’ve looked good performing in my dress and heels, He needed the audience to be focused on my words rather than my appearance. After that night, I understood the true meaning of “Obedience is more important than sacrifice.”

Overall, it was a great night. I had the pleasure of spending the night with my family and friends.

I want to give a BIG thanks to my sister Taty for opening up for me, Sad’e for trusting me to deliver and have full creative control, and the Black Excellence Community team for letting me be apart of their show. It was truly an honor.

Always remember, “It’s not on you, its in you and what’s in you, they can’t take away.” -Nipsey Hussle 🏁
